Is Mayonnaise An Instrument

An iconic and frequently quoted phrase from…? Anyone?

Yes, Sponge Bob Square Pants—the most successful show on Nickelodeon and the most successful cartoon show of its era—for the past 25 years.

But what we really want to know in this Guitar Tales is: Who is it that also seems to think he lives in a pineapple under the sea?

Could it be Steve Belfer?

Does he secretly consider himself Steve Bob Square Pants or perhaps Sponge Steve Square Bob Pants?

At first glance you may surmise that Steve could be an ultra enthusiastic fanboy but with a deeper dive into the depths of Steve and The Classic he is playing we just may find there is much more going on with this underlying underwater theme.

Steve began life as a baby. Ah, sorry, too far back.

Flash forward to 1989.  Steve, already an established musician, attended Cal Arts to further his creativity by studying animation. While there, he quickly met another Steve enrolled in the same class. Steve Hillenburg. You may recognize the name. The future creator of Sponge Bob.

Steve and Steve immediately hit it off. Hillenburg was impressed with Belfer’s creative musical abilities and asked Steve B. if he would do the music for his student project.

Apparently that went really well because in 1997, Steve Hillenburg again asked Steve Belfer if he would please do the music for a cartoon show he was working on called, Sponge Boy—later to be renamed Sponge Bob Square Pants because there was a mop called Sponge Boy.

Hillenburg loved the result so much that they used Steve Belfer’s musical works for the pilot with Nickelodeon. So perfect for the overall show, in fact, that to this day several of Steve B’s compositions are used in every single episode of Sponge Bob that has ever been aired. You will immediately recognize these now classic themes that mark the flavor of the entire show.

Steve Belfer has also done a lot of music for individual episodes of the show. So really could this be any more FUN? We don’t think so.

Let’s sing:

F is for friends who do stuff together

U is for you and me

N is for anywhere and anytime at all

Down here in the deep blue sea

Perhaps now it all makes sense and why we forced encouraged Steve to let us apply officially licensed and trademarked Sponge Bob stickers all over his guitar—The Classic, finished in Corvette Sponge Yellow.

Initially, Steve got this new yellow guitar to perform at Bikini Bottom Summerfest, an annual outdoor music festival in Milwaukee—the world’s largest. Nine days of continual partying. This is back home for him—to his original stomping grounds.

Also, check out “Steve’s Garage Show” on YouTube—featuring his music and other good stuff. If you are a car-guy it may be for you. He began this endeavor during Covid to entertain and connect with his friends. It just became too fun to stop. He is also doing a charitable collaboration with the former members of Oingo Boingo. Working on that now.

Infusing the world with delight, nautical nonsense and joy—is there a more valuable way to spend your time? Probably not. Thank you Steve.

No Patrick Steve, mayonnaise is not an instrument. But Steve’s Classic…that is definitely the ultimate instrument.

Party At Bikini Bottom! There will be no clarinet solos.
